When Goddess Parvati removed her outer golden skin to defeat the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, she manifested as Goddess Kalaratri. Known as the fiercest and most ferocious form of Goddess Parvati, Kalaratri embodies raw power and destruction of evil, while still carrying an inner essence of auspiciousness.
Goddess Kalaratri is described as dark-complexioned, riding on a donkey. She has four hands—the right hands showing Abhaya Mudra (gesture of protection) and Varada Mudra (gesture of granting boons). In her left hands, she holds a sword and an iron hook, symbolizing her fierce power to eliminate demons and obstacles.
Despite her ferocious appearance, Goddess Kalaratri is also called Shubhankari (शुभंकरी), meaning the one who brings auspiciousness. She blesses her devotees with courage, protection, and spiritual clarity. She removes fear, negative energies, and evil influences from her devotees lives, while granting peace, strength, and prosperity.
In Vedic astrology, Goddess Kalaratri governs the planet Shani (Saturn). Her influence is said to reduce the malefic effects of Shani, offering relief from hardships, karmic struggles, and delays, while guiding devotees toward discipline, patience, and justice.
